At Wellness Dental Center, we provide you a stress-free dental visit! If you, like many others, suffer from dental anxiety, phobia or a severe gag reflex, sedation dentistry or “sleep dentistry” may be a solution for you. With sedation dentistry, you will be placed in a completely relaxed state of conscious sedation for your entire dental procedure.
Ask us about what different methods of sedation dentistry we offer.
Nitrous Sedation (“laughing gas”)
N2O is a non-allergenic, non-irritating gas and has no color or smell.
It is one of the safest forms of sedation available.
By simply breathing the Nitrous Oxide, patients with dental fears will relax and feel less discomfort. It is especially relevant to our young patients.
You do not require any escort to accompany you. Patients are able to safely drive themselves home or to work at the end of their appointment. Most patients begin to feel the N2O take effect within 5 minutes and following treatment, the effects of this gas are completely reversed within 5 minutes of discontinuing gas and switching to pure oxygen, by simply breathing normally.
Intravenous (IV) conscious sedation
Intravenous Conscious sedation makes having dental work done comfortably and anxiety free. You will still be responsive to questions during the procedure, but your memory recall mechanism in your brain will be somewhat diminished. Therefore, you are asleep in the memory part of your brain but not in a protective reflexes (ect, breathing) part.
At Wellness Dental Center we do a detailed medical history review with all necessary X-rays for sedation. If you require medical clearance prior your appointment we will provide you with the referral to physician.
You cannot drink or eat anything for at least 8 hours prior your appointment. If you are taking medications prescribed by your physician (ex.: for Diabetes or Blood Pressure), you can take your pills with a small sip of water. You are required to bring somebody with you who can drive you and take you home the day of your sedation. The doctor will attach all necessary medical devices to take your baseline records including blood pressure, pulse oximeter and EKG of your heart. You will start breathing mixture of pure oxygen and nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) to induce your relaxation and analgesia. The IV will be started and proper medications administered. “Intravenous” means that the drug is put into a vein. An extremely thin needle is put into a vein close to the surface of the skin in either the arm or the back of your hand. This needle is wrapped up with a soft plastic tube and stays in throughout the entire procedure. The doctor will then give local anesthesia to numb your teeth. The next thing you know the procedure is over.
The whole dental appointment has passed in a flash and you got yourself a beautiful smile in a pain free manner.
